In 1487, Ferdinand conquered the town and the Christian flag was raised on the castle's battlements as the Moors were ejected.
There are also several remains of Phoenician cemeteries and tombs which hint at a still older history.
Many leisure activities in both Torre del Mar and La Caleta de Vélez centre on the sea. There are also numerous swimming pools and public sports installations. For lovers of rural tourism inland accommodation abounds. Vélez-Málaga is also a good base for exploring the rest of the Axarquía area. The recent construction of a green space in Velez Malaga called Parque Central has an extension of 60.000 squared metres and is considered as the big green lung of the town.

The town of Velez Malaga has all kind of services as hospital, buses, cinemas, shops, commercial center, aquapark, and the recent construction of a tram to connect this town with the neighbour Torre del Mar.
